large panel system building - die platte
The large panel system building[a] is a building constructed of large, prefabricated concrete slabs. Such buildings are often found in housing development areas.
Although large panel system-buildings are often considered to be typical of east germany and the majority of other eastern bloc countries, this prefabricated construction method was also used extensively in west germany and elsewhere, particularly in public housing (see tower block).
plattenbau or as commonly called in berlin "die platte" is a type of building which was once very much loved, then hated and now renewed into new types of buildings. this is a selection of buildings which once looked very different (but are often inhabited by the same people as 40 years ago).
